Phone numbers

Back to the style guide menu

No brackets around area codes. So it’s 01234 567890 not (01234) 567890.

Format London numbers like this: 020 7123 4567. That’s because 020 is the area code, not o207 or o208 (if you’re in London and calling The Writer you only need to dial 7940 7540 from a landline).

Non-London numbers only have one space in them. Get this right, otherwise Anelia will come round and explain the history of London phone numbers to you. Zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Mobile numbers should have a space after the first five digits. So it’s 07977 123456.

If you’re writing for an international audience, drop the zero – so our number is +44 20 7940 7540. If it’s for British and international, do it like this: +44 (0)20 7940 7540.

For US numbers, it goes like this: 646 568 3181. If you’re calling the US from abroad, include the international dialling code: +1 646 568 3181.
