Lower case for north, south, east and west, except when it’s part of a name like South Korea, South Africa, or East Anglia.

Also use lower case if it’s a vague area (‘northeast France’) but upper case if you’re talking about a specific region and using the word ‘the’ before it (like ‘the South’).
